A Quick Glossary Digital Piano of Terms

Here are some quick definitions of some of the terms we used in the article that you might not be familiar with if you're just starting your musical journey.

Aftertouch
A keyboard expression feature that enables you to alter a sound after you've pressed a key by simple increasing the pressure on the key. What changes is usually programmable, but the most common uses are to add modulation or reverb.

MIDI
An acronym standing for Musical Instrument Digital Interface, MIDI is not music, per se, but a digital communication protocol that sends instructions to an instrument. First developed in 1983, MIDI was a way to allow keyboards and synthesizers to control and communicate with each other, it's been applied to many other applications than just music, like stage lighting and mixer control.

Pedals
If you haven't played piano before, you may have wondered what those pedals at the pianist's feet do. Here's a quick right-to-left summary.

Sustain (also called damper)
When you press this pedal down, it lifts the dampers that stop the piano strings from ringing when they're not being played. When this pedal is held down, all the notes you play will continue to ring until they naturally decay or you let the pedal back up.

Sostenuto
A variation on the damper pedal, this will only lift the dampers on the notes which are being played at the time you press the pedal down. In effect, it enables you to play a chord and keep it ringing while you play something else over it with normal dampening.

Soft
Just what it says. On an acoustic piano, it decreases the distance the hammer has to travel to hit a string, making for lower volume.

Polyphony
How many notes or instrument voices can be played simultaneously. On an acoustic piano, that would be a very raucous and dissonant 88-note polyphony. On digital pianos, polyphony enables notes to ring without getting cut off. It also enables multiple sounds (voices) to be played at the same time. This is very useful if the piano allows layering. Some of the pianos we looked at have as much as 192-voice polyphony.

Velocity
How fast a key is struck. Faster generally equals harder, which means louder. All the keyboard we looked at are velocity sensitive, regardless of what keyboard action they have.

Velocity Curve
How fast different velocities change from soft to loud. This variation is part of what gives an acoustic piano its individual feel, and the more advanced digital pianos enable you to adjust this curve to customize the playing response to your personal style and preference.

Common Types of Pianos

Grand, Upright, and Electronic pianos are the most common types of pianos.

Grand

The largest and the most expensive type of piano. Grand Pianos have soundboards that are horizontal. The Soundboard is inside a supportable opening platform that lifts on the left in a upwards direction. Dampers are on top of the strings, close to the hammers. The internal construction is braced with form-holders, usually made of wood, as well as the small equipped metal reinforcements. Essentially the casing is "bottomless" allowing one to see the soundboard support base, also of reinforced wood, which technically acts as the base. Keys consist of wood coated in ivory, or sometimes pure ivory, depending on the piano's manufacturers and classification. The grand piano has the standard 88 keys. Most of these pianos have sheet music platforms. A cover slides over, or folds down on the keys.

Upright

The most common piano, and is a popular addition to a living room or a parlor. The Upright piano is more common because it costs less money, is smaller, and offers a warm sound. The soundboard is vertical, strings and dampers stretching downward, hammers and dampers horizontal to the board. Since the hammers strike outward, they take slightly longer to return to resting position than the hammers of a grand (which strike vertically). The support base of the soundboard and the wooden reinforcements are visible on the backside. Although uprights often are depicted as inferior to the grand pianos, a five-foot upright can rival a typical grand in terms of tone quality and loudness. The keyboard is the same as the grand.

Electric

Electric pianos are the most affordable, and are good for beginners. Some have hollow keys, while others try to replicate the feel and weight of acoustic keyboards. Electric pianos have a variety of sounds and settings, for example organ, guitar, string, choir, and percussion. The numerous sounds on some keyboards make it virtually a portable band. Other pianos have limited functions, but this is better for someone who is trying to replicate an acoustic and save money. True electric pianos (compared to the plain keyboards) have a professional appearance and good materials (most consist largely of plastic), as well as touch sensitive features and sometimes equipped frames. Most have connectors for pedals and computer interactive abilities. They never need to be tuned, and rapidly becoming more popular in modern bands. The user can also practice silently with headphones. Technological infancy and power supply are a few drawbacks to the electric piano.

Types of Electric Pianos and Weight

product-626-468

Electric pianos are common for beginners or performers that are constantly on the move. Additionally, they are called digital pianos. These pianos are all under 59 inches in width. There are four major types.

Beginners Electric Keyboard
It ranges from 51-57 inches.
It weighs between 20-40 pounds.
These are the lightest of the electric pianos. They are used for beginning music instruction.

Professional Digital Keyboard
It ranges from 51-57 inches.
It weighs between 25-60 pounds.
This keyboard maintains all of the portable capabilities of the beginner's electric keyboard. In addition, it provides a richer sound.

Standalone Digital Piano
It ranges from 51-57 inches.
It weighs between 100-300 pounds.
Digital pianos produce sounds closer to that of a traditional acoustic piano. They often come with sound samples of different instruments. This makes them ideal for exploring more sounds on a digital scale.

Digital Grand Piano
It ranges from 51-57 inches.
It weights between 150-300 pounds.
This is the heaviest of the electric pianos. Interestingly, it offers the richest sound that is closest to a traditional acoustic grand piano but still allows for portability.

Why Do People Like Electronic Piano?

1) It sounds and feels like a real piano enough. Yes, the keys are weighted and it felt very very natural to play.

2) You can control the volume – this is CLUTCH. We love it when our kids bang/play or practice. And we can control the volume when they are playing this kind of piano.

3) You can plug in headphones. So if they DO want to use all the extra features (which admittedly can be annoying) they can do it with headphones so no one has to hear. You can even hook up two headphones so they can both hear.

4) The kids love the extra "features". This is basically where you play the keys and it sounds like drums, acapella singers, and even gun bullets (not a fan). These are annoying, but obviously very fun for the kids to play. Headphones are key.

5) It's not a "player" piano per se, but there are a lot of songs pre-loaded that you can hit play on. The keys don't go up and down but it does sound really nice. Would a Spotify playlist sound as good? Maybe. But it's a fun feature, regardless.

6) You can record your own playing and playback, set tempo, and of course, change the type of piano sound (ballad versus concert piano, etc). It will be fun to play with.

How to Clean Digital Piano Keys?

product-626-468

If you want to learn how to clean digital piano keys effectively, limiting the risk of inflicting any damage, these are the exact steps I recommend you to apply:

1) Use a small bowl with warm water. Add two or three drops of dish washing liquid, depending on how much water you use.

2) Dampen a soft, colorless cloth into that mixture and wipe all the white keys gently, one by one. It's very important for the cloth to be only damp, no water should be dripping, as it may harm the internal mechanism should any drip between the keys inside the keyboard. Now take another soft cloth that should be dry this time. Wipe away the excess moisture should any remain on the keys. This should remove dust and fingerprints from the white keys.

3) Next repeat the procedure for the black keys with two different cloths; one damp and one dry.

4) Make sure all the keys are perfectly dry.

5) If you want to clean a keyboard that is dirtier than usual, you can use a mild detergent in combination with water, or a soap. Rinse the keys diligently using two cloths as described before: one damp and one dry. Insist in the areas that are dirtier.

6) If you notice that the before mentioned steps are not able to remove the stains on the keys, you are better off contacting a professional than trying to remove them by yourself with stronger chemical solutions.

How to Use Electric Spinet Piano?

The electric piano is a type of keyboard instrument that has a compact and lightweight design, making it easy to transport and store. It also has a built-in amplifier and speaker, so you don't need any external equipment to play it. Here are some tips on how to use the electric spinet piano effectively.

Choose a Suitable Location for Your Electric Spinet Piano
You should place it on a flat and stable surface, away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and moisture. You should also avoid placing it near other electronic devices that may cause interference or noise.

Plug in the Power Cord and Turn On the Power Switch
The power switch is usually located on the back or side of the instrument. You should see a light indicator that shows that the power is on. If not, check the power cord and outlet for any problems.

Adjust the Volume and Tone Controls
The volume control is usually a knob or slider that lets you adjust the loudness of the sound. The tone control is usually a button or switch that lets you choose between different sound effects, such as piano, organ, harpsichord, etc. You can experiment with different settings to find the one that suits your preference and style.

Play the Keys and Pedals
The keys are the white and black buttons that produce the musical notes. The pedals are the foot-operated levers that modify the sound quality. The most common pedals are the sustain pedal, which prolongs the sound of the notes, and the soft pedal, which reduces the volume and brightness of the sound. You can use both pedals together or separately, depending on the effect you want to create.

Enjoy Your Music and Have Fun!
The electric spinet piano is a versatile and expressive instrument that can play a variety of genres and styles. You can learn how to play songs by following sheet music, online tutorials, or your own creativity. You can also record your performance using a recording device or software, or share it with others using social media or online platforms.

Things to Consider When Buying a Digital Piano

Whether you're new to music or a seasoned player, just about every customer we encounter has questions when shopping for a digital piano.

Prior to purchasing an instrument, we suggest considering the following questions:

Who will be playing it?

Start by assessing who in your family will be initially using the piano. Are they a beginner, intermediate or advanced player? It's important to match the quality of the instrument to the level of the player to avoid disappointment and nurture growth. For families with players at a wider range of experience, find an instrument versatile enough to handle everyone. Our Sales Advisors are highly skilled and can help you select a model suitable for all players in your family.

How will you be using it?

Will your new piano be used as a learning tool? Do you have plans to connect it to a computer or mobile device? How will you learn to play? Do you intend to take lessons on your own or with a teacher?

Does it need to be portable or will it stay mainly in one spot?

Will you need to take the piano places? Today's models are lightweight and accessories are available such as carry bags, folding stands and benches that will provide comfort, ease-of-use and flexibility. Ask about our bundles! They're designed to give you the accessories you'll need at a great deal.

Where will it be placed in your home?

If it's for home use in a fixed location, you'll be able to choose from upright or grand shaped models with a variety of finishes to match your décor. For homes that have space restrictions, a portable model can be put away into a closet between practice sessions. Every digital piano can be used with headphones.

Have you established a budget amount for this purchase?

As with anything you buy, there are different levels of quality. For digital pianos, it helps to break them down into "good," "better" or "best." A good model, also called entry-level, can cost $600 to $1200. These will typically include weighted keys, built-in speakers and USB connectivity. Better pianos ($1,200 to $3,000) improve on the action and sound engine to provide a more realistic playing experience. The best models ($3,000 and up) include the highest rated actions, sound engines, speaker systems and build quality.
Premium-quality models are in a class of their own. These include hybrids (combining acoustic actions with digital features) and top-of-the-line models utilizing the best components and design ($6,000 to $15,000).

Frequently Asked Questions About Electric Spinet Piano

Q: What is piano?

A: The piano is a keyboard instrument that produces sound when pressed on the keys. Most modern pianos have a row of 88 black and white keys: 52 white keys for the notes of the C major scale (C, D, E, F, G, A, and B) and 36 shorter black keys raised above the white keys and set further back, for sharps and flats. This means that the piano can play 88 different pitches (or "notes"), spanning a range of a bit over seven octaves. The black keys are for the "accidentals" (F♯/G♭, G♯/A♭, A♯/B♭, C♯/D♭, and D♯/E♭), which are needed to play in all twelve keys.

Q: What are digital piano, digital keyboard, and synthesizer?

A: Digital Pianos are musical instruments which attempts to mimic the sounds and action of an acoustic piano by simulating the overall piano experience as closely as possible, in a smaller, typically lower-cost package. Digital Keyboards can offer up the sound of a piano but are normally shorter and have fewer keys than a full piano, such as 61 notes or 73 notes. A synthesizer is a term more associated with the creation of non-organic / acoustic tones, such as sine waves, modulators, LFO, etc, and effects overall. However, it should be noted that none of these terms are strictly observed in the industry, and at times they are used interchangeably.

Q: What is keyboard action?

A: A keyboard action refers to the mechanism and attached keys that are supposed to simulate the physical feel of an acoustic piano, as well as translate that motion into digital information. Keyboard actions come in a wide variety of configurations, from 100% plastic spring-loaded 'waterfall' actions to wooden key actions with proper hammers and let-off/escapement.

Q: What if my piano is damaged during the move?

A: Any good moving company will have you sign a liability form for your piano. This means that insurance will cover any damage or replacement if your piano is damaged during the move.
If you do a DIY move, you'll obviously be responsible for any damage to the piano or home.

Q: How do I know what type of piano I have?

A: On an acoustic piano, the model number and serial number are stamped on the frame of the piano. On an upright piano, you will find the model number on the right hand side of the frame, and the serial number is stamped on the frame around the middle of the piano, normally in line with the middle octave of the piano.

Q: What is the difference between a digital piano and an electric piano?

A: Digital pianos will often not have as many voices and technical specs as an electric piano, but they aren't intended for stage and recording use, at least not to the same extent. They are intended for serious piano practice (or even performances), and they will also provide a nice visual accent to your home.

Q: Why is it called a spinet?

A: The name spinet may derive from the Latin spinae ("thorns"), perhaps reflecting the shape of the tiny quills or leather wedges that pluck the strings. In modern usage, "spinet" commonly refers to a short form of upright piano.

Q: What is the smallest verticalt piano?

A: Spinet Piano
The smallest of the vertical pianos, these usually are 36" to 39" tall. The piano actions are compressed and are attached to the keys by a rod mechanism. These pianos are harder to service and regulate and are not currently being manufactured.

Q: How does a spinet piano work?

A: If you look inside a spinet, the hammers are usually located below the key level, while on an upright, they are above. A spinet's keys and hammers have a drop-action (also called indirect blow action). This is not nearly as effective as the key action on an upright piano.

Q: What is the middle pedal on a spinet piano?

A: Often it's either a sort of partial sostenuto – holding dampers only for low-register notes – or a "mute" or "practice" pedal, which brings a piece of felt down between the hammers and strings, causing the piano to become very quiet.

Q: What are the advantages of a spinet piano?

A: Spinet pianos are small and lightweight, making them easy to move around. They are usually the cheapest option; however, they don't have the same range of sound as uprights or grands due to their limited size.
