The North American Division of the 2025 Dunhuang Cup Chinese Instrumental Music Competition officially kicked off in Vancouver, Canada on December 12th. As a core cultural program of the Canada International Multicultural Arts Festival, the event will run until December 31st, building a new platform for China-Canada cultural exchanges with traditional Chinese music as a bridge. Founded in 2010, this top-tier competition for Chinese national instrumental music has established international divisions in countries such as Japan and Singapore over 15 years of development. The comprehensive upgrade of the North American Division this year marks that the international communication of traditional Chinese music has entered a systematic new stage.

This year's competition has achieved multiple groundbreaking innovations: it has fully established three professional categories (bowed string instruments, plucked string instruments, and wind & percussion instruments) in North America for the first time, added the pipa competition item, and covered classic Chinese national instruments such as erhu, guzheng, bamboo flute, and Chinese drum, constructing a more comprehensive competition system. Adopting international top-tier music competition standards, the event has formed a professional jury panel, attracting folk music learners and professional performers from various regions in Canada and the United States. It not only provides a high-standard display stage for overseas Chinese children but also allows local audiences to intuitively experience the professional charm of Chinese music.
In addition to the competitive sessions, the event simultaneously launches diversified cultural interactive activities, including traditional Chinese music performances, master classes, and special lectures on Chinese music aesthetics. Senior folk music educators such as Chen Wenying, founder of the Canada Conservatory of Music, personally participate in teaching, helping the audience deeply understand the cultural connotations behind the instruments. As an important part of the global layout of the "Dunhuang Cup," the North American Division is not only a venue for artistic competition but also a window for cultural communication - through forms such as instrumental performances and teaching exchanges, it enables the thousand-year-old traditional Chinese music to take root and bear fruit in the multicultural soil, promoting in-depth dialogue and integration between China and Canada in the field of art.

The organizers stated that this event aims to make the world hear the voice of China through instrumental music as a medium. In the future, they will continue to expand the competition's coverage in North America, allowing fine traditional Chinese culture to shine with enduring brilliance on the international stage through music, a universal language.
