The Rewapu originated in Kashgar, southern Xinjiang, China. Over time, it has undergone continuous development and evolution through different historical periods. As an important musical instrument of the Uyghur people, the Rewapu has been integrated into all aspects of people's lives, constantly being improved and refined.

The Rewapu usually consists of several main parts: the headstock, neck, soundbox, strings, and tuning pegs. The headstock features diverse shapes, often adorned with exquisite carvings-some curved like ram's horns, others blooming like flowers-showcasing unique artistic beauty. The soundbox serves as the resonator of the Rewapu, playing a key role in the instrument's sound production. Most strings are made of steel or nylon-steel, which can withstand appropriate tension while producing clear, melodious, and elastic tones. The tuning pegs are mounted on both sides of the headstock, used to adjust the tightness of the strings and thus change the pitch.

The Rewapu boasts a distinctive and charming timbre, combining clarity, brightness, and richness to form a highly recognizable sound. It possesses strong musical expressiveness, capable of conveying diverse emotions and styles through various playing techniques. By using different fingerings and plucking methods, performers can easily create musical images of joy, sorrow, passion, calmness, and other moods. In the bass range, the Rewapu's timbre is deep and full, creating a solemn and steady musical atmosphere. It is often used to express grand and profound themes, such as depicting vast grasslands and majestic mountains. In the treble range, the timbre becomes bright, sharp, and penetrating, suitable for playing cheerful and lively melodies-especially the fast-paced tunes in traditional Uyghur dances, where the Rewapu can fully enhance the joyful atmosphere.

The Rewapu can also perform in ensemble with other ethnic musical instruments. In such collaborations, it can not only play the main melody to showcase its unique timbre but also complement other instruments well, setting the mood and enriching the harmony.
