The part connecting the reed to the mouthpiece is made of hard rubber, plastic, wood or metal. Professional models mostly use hard rubber for a softer and more natural tone.

The sound production process of the clarinet is a complete chain: airflow – vibration – resonance – sound radiation. It mainly relies on the player's breath control and single-reed vibration, and with the unique resonance of the cylindrical tube, forms its rich and versatile timbre characteristics. In this process, the player's breath control (strength, speed, volume), lip condition (tension, moisture), reed vibration effect, and key accuracy all directly affect timbre and intonation.

The clarinet remains vibrant after centuries thanks to its unique advantages in tone, range, playing techniques and adaptability. It balances professionalism and popularity, and adapts to diverse musical scenes, making it "the most expressive all-round instrument" in the woodwind family. The clarinet boasts a wide variety of playing techniques, suitable for both virtuosic fast scales and passages and delicate lyrical melodies, demonstrating extremely strong artistic expressiveness. These include legato, staccato, tenuto and spiccato. Legato playing is smooth and connected, ideal for lyrical melodies; staccato is crisp and powerful, suitable for rhythmic passages; tenuto and spiccato are achieved through breath accents, full of elasticity, and often used in marches and light music.
