The body is the main part of the suona, usually made from hard woods like rosewood or sandalwood, which have fine textures. The bell, also called the horn, is located at the end of the suona and is usually made of copper in a flared shape. Its main function is to amplify the sound and enhance the resonance of the tone.

The suona has a very distinctive tone. It possesses a bright and piercing quality, and when the player blows with full breath, its sound can travel far, creating a lively and grand atmosphere in open spaces. It can also, through skilful breath control and fingering techniques, present a melodious, delicate, and soft tonal effect. Breath control is key in suona playing, with the performer manipulating the tone and pitch through different inhaling and exhaling methods as well as variations in breath intensity. In terms of fingering, the player uses techniques such as covering and uncovering holes and sliding to change the pitch and produce special sound effects.
