The bars are mostly made of hard wood with uniform density, and their dimensions follow strict acoustic laws: for each octave the pitch rises, the length of the bar is halved and the thickness decreases in a fixed proportion.

The resonance system acts as the amplifier of the xylophone's timbre, mainly composed of resonance tubes, resonance boxes or resonance gourds. Its function is to enhance the resonance effect of the bar vibrations, prolong the reverberation and enrich the timbre layers. The stand is the supporting structure of the xylophone, mainly made of metal (steel, aluminum) or wood, divided into fixed and foldable types. Fixed stands offer strong stability and are often used for professional performances and orchestral ensembles, while foldable stands are lightweight and portable, suitable for outdoor performances and teaching. The striking tools for the xylophone are mallets, which can produce different timbral effects according to their different materials, shapes and hardness.
The xylophone has a diverse classification system based on criteria such as form, material, range and usage. Different types of xylophones feature unique timbres, playing methods and application scenarios, together forming a complete xylophone family. The standard xylophone has hardwood bars equipped with metal resonance tubes, the bars are arranged according to the twelve-tone equal temperament with a range of 3 to 4 octaves, making it the most common type of xylophone.
With an extremely distinctive and malleable timbre, the xylophone is hailed as the lyrical poet of percussion instruments. Its timbral characteristics can be summarized in three core dimensions: high-frequency dominance with bright timbre; delicate dynamics with strong expressiveness; diverse timbres with broad adaptability. There are significant timbral differences between different types of xylophones: the standard symphonic xylophone has a bright and transparent timbre with precise intonation, suitable for classical music and orchestral ensembles; the vibraphone has a soft and lively timbre with a unique tremolo effect, suitable for jazz and lyrical music.
